A Devotional for the Anxious Heart: 1 Peter 5:6-7

Scripture: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him because he cares for you.” (ESV)

Thought: Our pride, or refusal to depend on God and be subject to him) often is the root of my anxiety. Pride keeps us captive to worry, anxiety, and dread because we are constantly trying to be “enough”. We are not enough on our own—never have been, never will be. Only through the power of the Holy Spirit are we made whole, new creations in Christ.

Application: What do you do with worry? Are you humble enough to go to God with even the smallest worry? Do you know that he cares enough for even the tiniest worry and he can bear the load of all our worries? Take time each day to tell God your worries, even the little ones. Humility is being vulnerable enough to come to God broken and ready to receive his healing balm.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, I pray for the Spirit to bring full acceptance of my neediness into my heart, not as a bad thing, but rather as a good and precious gift. Accepting my dependence on you affirms your goodness as a loving, gracious, and powerful Creator God and Father. Help me to act according to that truth—give you my worries and step out into the world to live fully in faith. Amen.
