Finding Joy in Our Hobbies

We continue our series of finding joy today with our focus on hobbies. Early this year we discussed the lost art of hobbies and finding hobbies to do as a couple. Both of our articles expressed the importance and value of having a hobby and being open to a hobby to enjoy with your spouse.

Today I am missing my niece getting confirmed as I have a sick kiddo and am having a hard time missing such a milestone. However, it has given me an opportunity to do a hobby that I love… sewing!! However, I did not set out with utmost joy or look at it as an opportunity. Instead, I started out with endless thoughts of how has it been a few months since I have sewn? Will this gift still be appropriate for the recipient or will they have outgrown the need by the time I get it to them?

In addition, the holidays are nearing and I love to give homemade gifts that I have crafted. Again, the same previous questions circle my mind…no time, will the value be there, and more. However, as I began to sew and the stitches appeared my joy began to return. As I completed the project my joy was overflowing for the beauty of my work, the joy I hope the recipient will receive, and the joy of giving myself the time to do something that I love.

Psalm 16:11 reads “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” God has laid our path in life. We just need to always remember to find the joy on the path and know that there are pleasures that abound.
