Learning & Education…Finding the Right Degree

Education…it is the only thing we do for a number of years of our life. We spend countless hours in a school classroom learning, memorizing, and more. We play, we make friends and life seems full of no worries. As we are told…we are being prepared for being an adult.

Then we enter adulthood and we find that we know very little. Yes, we still know 2+2 is 4 but what about navigating buying a home, planning for retirement, starting a new career, and, of course, no one trains you to be a parent.

Over the years, I have held a number of positions in various jobs and have loved that I learn a new skill set each time. I build upon what I do know and add skills that I had yet to learn. I am continually learning. Currently, I am contemplating what is the best continuing education for myself this year. Which designation or path seems to make the most sense or benefit me the most?

However, over the last year, I have learned something that no educator or school would have ever been able to teach me. I began a new journey in homeschooling our son. Yes a major undertaking indeed, but what an opportunity for learning for myself! It has been a humbling experience, to say the least.

I feel like I have learned what education truly needs to be. Parenting is one of the toughest jobs we will have, but then it isn’t really a job…it is a gift. Within that gift is our responsibility to give our children an education to walk with the Lord so that all of the other learning in life seems like nothing.

Proverbs 22:6 reads “train up a child in the way he should go: even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Educating ourselves, our children, and those around us about the love that God has for us and how to walk with him, is the most important education we can undergo in our time here on earth. It doesn’t matter what designation I receive or if I have earned another degree or another promotion at work. Those designations and degrees come with stress, frustration, and a lack of fulfillment that we never know quite why. The work that is most rewarding is living a life for God and giving our children the tools they need to grow in their faith is the greatest gift of education we can give them.
