November Devotional: Psalm 1:1-3

Scripture: Psalm 1:1-3

Blessed is the one

    who does not walk in step with the wicked

or stand in the way that sinners take

    or sit in the company of mockers,

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

    and who meditates on his law day and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,

    which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither—

    whatever they do prospers. (NIV)

Thought: Walk with the wicked. Stand with the sinners. Sit with mockers. We have a choice. We choose where to walk, where to stand, and where to sit. Those who delight and meditate on the law are those who are like a tree planted by water, receiving nourishment regularly and fully. As believers in Christ, we must be regularly nourished with His truth in order to stand strong against the pressure of the world, the flesh, and the devil. How easy, when we have been nourished, it is to feel as though we are invincible, but how quickly we lose our resolve when removed from the source of our strength.

Action: How will I nourish my soul in order to resist walking with the wicked, standing with sinners, and sitting with mockers? How can I go among them and be a light without risking my light being snuffed out? Make a list of all the things you are currently doing to nourish yourself in God’s truth. Is there anything missing? If so, determine how to seek that nourishment.

Prayer: Dear Lord, You have blessed me with knowledge of the truth. However, I know how easy it is to wander, to lose sight of the source of my nourishment. Help me, Lord, to recognize when my roots are even slightly thirsty. Help me, Lord, not to wait until my soul is parched to seek you. Amen.
